Lalu Prasad Yadav Backs Mamata Banerjee to Lead INDIA Bloc Amid Congress Objections
RJD chief and former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav has voiced strong support for Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee to lead the opposition INDIA bloc, dismissing Congress’s objections. Speaking to ANI on December 10, Yadav emphasized that Mamata should be given leadership responsibilities, marking a significant endorsement amid growing calls for her role in the alliance.
This backing follows Trinamool Congress MP Kirti Azad’s assertion that Banerjee, having consistently defeated the BJP in West Bengal, is the most suitable leader for the bloc. Last week, Banerjee herself expressed interest in taking charge, emphasizing her ability to ensure smooth functioning while advocating for inclusive decision-making.
Prominent leaders within the alliance, including NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) chief Sharad Pawar and Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut, have also supported her leadership. Pawar highlighted her parliamentary contributions and leadership capabilities, while Raut stressed the close ties between Shiv Sena and Banerjee, describing her as a “good leader” and a crucial partner in the INDIA alliance.
This development comes amid questions about the bloc’s direction following recent electoral setbacks. Discussions on formalizing Banerjee’s role as leader are ongoing, with some leaders favoring a later decision.
Notably, this isn’t Lalu Yadav’s first endorsement of Banerjee. During a 2023 INDIA bloc meeting in Bengaluru, he criticized Congress and Left leaders for targeting Banerjee in West Bengal, urging unity within the opposition ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
